About Studio Ghibli

The Magic of Ghibli

Studio Ghibli is a renowned Japanese animation film studio headquartered in Koganei, Tokyo. Founded on June 15, 1985, by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, the studio has produced some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed animated features in cinematic history. Ghibli films are known for their breathtaking animation, imaginative storytelling, strong female protagonists, and deep exploration of themes like environmentalism, pacifism, and humanity's relationship with nature and technology.

The name "Ghibli" was chosen by Miyazaki from the Italian noun ghibli (also used in English), based on the Libyan-Arabic name for the hot desert wind of that country; the idea was the studio would "blow a new wind through the anime industry".

Legendary Founders

Hayao Miyazaki

A master storyteller and animator, Miyazaki is celebrated for films like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away (which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature), and Howl's Moving Castle. His works often feature intricate worlds, complex characters, and a profound sense of wonder.

Isao Takahata

Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, directed critically acclaimed films such as the heart-wrenching Grave of the Fireflies, the charming My Neighbors the Yamadas, and the visually stunning The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. His films often explored different animation styles and tackled mature themes.

Together with producer Toshio Suzuki, Miyazaki and Takahata established Studio Ghibli as a powerhouse of creativity and artistic integrity in the world of animation.
